11 Videos that will Make Videographers Want to Visit Iceland

Iceland is a cool and weird place, where the European and North American continents meet. This creates some of the coolest natural marvels on the planet, making it an absolute treasure for anyone in the video or motion graphics industry.

Iceland is closer than you think and easier to get to. It’s also more connected than many other places in the world, even though it feels remote. Wi-Fi is standard in most locations, and 4G blankets mean you will have cell service almost everywhere. Here are some legitimate reasons this little part of the world should be on the top of your “must visit” list.

Sustenance

Unspoiled glaciers and snow runoff ensure you will drink some of the purest water on the planet during your stay.

Not only is the water good, but the food is…interesting. The Icelandic diet includes incredible lamb and seafood dishes steeped in tradition. Fermented shark and smoked puffin are two national specialties that get mixed reviews from tourists, but you should at least give them a try.

Local craft beers also abound, and you can sample these at bars like Micro and Slippbarinn, both of which have great selections.

Food does tend to be expensive, as many ingredients have to be imported, so be sure to budget accordingly.

Culture

Reykjavik is a cultural hub that includes galleries, theater, museums, public gardens, and over 40 annual festivals. Despite all of this culture packed into it, it still feels a lot like a village. Because of how compact it is, walking will get most tourists where they want to go.

The Reykjavik Museum of Photography, located on the sixth floor of the library, is a fascinating and worthwhile stop along with the Phallus Museum, which is both humorously and disturbingly exactly what it sounds like.

No matter what your cultural desires, you’ll find something you are looking for on the scene in Iceland.

Music

Icelandic natives like their music, and they hold several festivals annually, including Secret Solstice in June, at a time when the island gets a lot of the midnight sun. Other festivals abound throughout the year as well.

This also means Iceland has a rich nightlife, with many live music venues, dance clubs, and other interesting things to do once the clock passes the dinner hour, as the sun only goes down briefly during summer months.

The Northern Lights and The Midnight Sun

Speaking of things that happen after dark, the famed Icelandic midnight sun is especially showcased in June, when it is most prominent. The Northern latitude means there is almost 24 hour daylight from mid-May to late July.

When it isn’t bright summer, from September until mid-April is the best time to see the Northern Lights in Iceland, one of the best reasons to visit during the winter months as well.

Cycling

Some of the best cycling in the world can be found in Iceland, whether you want to cycle around the island on flatter terrain, or gain some significant elevation over mountain landscapes.

As seen in this short video by Bicycle Touring Pro, the landscapes are incredible. Dress warmly and go as far, and as high, as you would like.

Road Trips

With fantastic infrastructure and great roads, Iceland is fantastic for road tripping. One of the most popular and common trips is the Iceland Ring Road. But don’t limit yourself to just these well-known roads. There are many other fantastic trips you can take by car, from the coast to volcanos and glaciers, including some trips in the famous Iceland SuperJeeps.

Mountains

Whether you hike, mountain bike, or fly over them, the mountains of Iceland are beautiful and awe inspiring. They draw everyone from amateur climbers to professional skiers. The mountains alone are enough to inspire a visit to this great island, but you shouldn’t take someone else’s word for it.

Geothermal Pools

Fancy a soak in a natural hot spring fed by water heated by the earth itself? Then Iceland is the place for you. From developed pools that are family friendly to remote springs you will have to hike to, there is something for everyone.  One of the best known is the Blue Lagoon hot springs. Not only do these pools feel good, but they are also stunning, offering views you won’t find anywhere else in the world.

Black Beaches

There is nothing like a good day at the beach, especially if it is one of the unique black beaches of Iceland. The chill air, the sound of the crashing waves, and the unique landscape all offer an unforgettable experience.  When you visit Iceland, these black sand beaches are a must see. You won’t regret taking the time for them.

Volcanos Inside and Out

You may or may not have seen a volcano, but you probably have not climbed inside one. You can when you travel to Iceland. You can undertake your own journey to the center of the earth, but you can only go part of the way (Sorry Jules Verne).

Horseback Riding

One of the most amazing things you will see in Iceland is the Icelandic horse. These beasts are compact and amazingly strong, and they are also a great way to see the countryside.  Once you get used to their unique gait, you will be on your way to a comfortable and adventurous ride.
